On the Other Side of the Door
On the Other Side of the door
I can be a different me, As smart and as brave and as funny or strong As a person could want to be. There's nothing too hard for me to do, There's no place I can't explore Because everything can happen On the other side of the door. On the other side of the door I don't have to go alone. If you come, too, we can sail tall ships And fly where the wind has flown. And wherever we go, it is almost sure We'll find what we're looking for because everything can happen On the other side of the door. - Jeff Moss |
Open the door to Theatre Arts at Powell Elementary where anything can happen . . .When I was thirteen years old, I was entranced by a production of Anton Chekov's The Seagull at The Public Theatre in New York City. Except, one thing was wrong: I was supposed to be on stage with the other actors instead of in my seat in the audience! That was when I knew I wanted to be an actor. I still remember the sound of the curtain opening on my high school stage - the way it simultaneously made my stomach drop and filled me with excitement. The most important experiences of my life have happened through the theatre. I earned a BFA in Acting/Directing, received certification to teach Theatre Arts and Language Arts, and eventually acquired an M.Ed. with a Focus in Literacy and National Board Certification in Literacy as well, because I realized that theatre and literacy were one and the same.
Theatre engages our whole self. It teaches us how to collaborate, concentrate, create, and think critically. It allows us to imagine other worlds, step into them, and explore them; can you think of a better tool for teaching children? Whether a student studies pantomime, poetry performance, or acts in a play at Powell, they will discover their own power to express what they understand and who they are. |
